Uttarakhand Avalanche: 46 Rescued, 4 Dead, Rescue On

At least four workers have died and several others remain trapped after a massive avalanche struck a Border Roads Organisation (BRO) camp in the remote village of Mana, Chamoli district, Uttarakhand, on Friday morning. A total of 55 workers were caught in the avalanche, with 50 successfully rescued, while search efforts continue for the remaining five.

The avalanche hit the camp, burying the workers under eight containers and a shed between 5:30 and 6:00 am. Despite the perilous conditions, including treacherous terrain, heavy snowfall, and freezing temperatures, rescue teams—comprising personnel from the Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) and the Indian Army—rushed to the scene to save those trapped.

Efforts were severely hampered by adverse weather, leading to a temporary suspension of the operation as night fell. However, with improved weather conditions on Saturday, six helicopters, including three from the Army and two from the Air Force, were deployed to evacuate the workers, as roads remain blocked.

Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami conducted an aerial survey of the affected area and spoke with an injured worker being airlifted for treatment. In a statement, Dhami assured that the state government is working swiftly to ensure effective rescue and relief efforts.

As the search continues, the tragic incident highlights the dangers faced by workers in the high-altitude, hazardous conditions of the region, underscoring the urgent need for enhanced safety measures.
