Former Bangladesh cricket captain Tamim Iqbal suffered a massive heart attack during a Dhaka Premier Division Cricket League match and has been rushed to a hospital in Savar, on the outskirts of Dhaka. According to local media, his condition is critical, and he has been placed on life support.
Dr. Debashish Chowdhury, the chief physician of the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB), confirmed that initial medical checks at a local hospital indicated mild heart issues. However, while being transported to Dhaka, he experienced severe chest pain, forcing officials to return him to the hospital. Subsequent medical reports confirmed that he had suffered a massive heart attack.
“It is a difficult time for all of us. He is currently under observation, and the medical team is doing everything possible for his recovery,” Dr. Chowdhury added.
The incident occurred during a match between Mohammedan Sporting Club and Shinepukur Cricket Club in Savar. Authorities had initially arranged for airlifting him to Dhaka, but due to his deteriorating condition, he was instead rushed to Fazilatunnesa Hospital from the BKSP ground.
Tamim, who retired from international cricket in January, has been involved in local matches and commentary stints since stepping away from the national team. Reflecting on his retirement, he stated in a Facebook post that he had been considering the decision for a while and did not want discussions about his return to affect the team’s focus ahead of the Champions Trophy.
“I have been away from international cricket for quite some time, and that gap will not close. My chapter in international cricket is over,” Tamim wrote. He also mentioned that, despite captain Nazmul Hossain’s request and discussions with selectors, he felt it was the right time to step away.
His sudden health crisis has left the cricketing fraternity in shock, with fans and well-wishers praying for his speedy recovery.
