An Indian who was duped into joining Russia’s war against Ukraine has been killed, a TV news channel has reported. The Indian Embassy in Russia confirmed Mohammed Asfan’s death on Wednesday in a post on X, but it did not provide an explanation or mention what the Hyderabadi man was doing there.
“We have been informed of the untimely passing of Shri Mohammed Asfan, an Indian national. Both the family and the Russian authorities are in contact with us. The embassy stated in the post that “the mission will make efforts to send his mortal remains to India,” the embassy said in the post.
The family of Afsan, one of almost twenty Indians abducted to Russia under the guise of high-paying jobs, claimed that AIMIM chief Asaduddin Owaisi notified them of his passing.
Last month, Owaisi was among the first to draw attention to the problem. The AIMIM leader claimed on February 21 that he had written to S Jaishankar, the Minister of External Affairs, about men from Telangana, Gujarat, Karnataka, Jammu and Kashmir, and Uttar Pradesh who had been duped in this way and were compelled to fight in the conflict.
