In response to a stern rebuke from the Supreme Court, co-founders of Patanjali Ayurveda, Yoga guru Ramdev and Balkrishna, issued a new public apology published in newspapers on Wednesday, April 24. This apology comes in the wake of a contempt case filed against them for distributing misleading health cure advertisements.
The Supreme Court, during the hearing on Tuesday, questioned the size of their initial apology, suggesting it should match the scale of their advertisements. This prompted the issuance of a more comprehensive apology from Patanjali, expressing unconditional regret for the non-compliance with the court’s directives.
Earlier, on Tuesday, Patanjali had issued an apology vowing not to repeat such mistakes in the future. This preemptive move preceded the court’s hearing on the misleading ads case against the company.
During the proceedings, the Supreme Court emphasized the need for stringent action by the Union Government against such misleading advertisements. Justice Kohli specifically requested to see the actual size of the advertisement and questioned if the apology matched its magnitude.
The case stems from a contempt notice issued on February 27 against Ramdev and Balkrishna for promoting products with unverified claims of curing diseases like heart conditions and asthma. The court had barred Patanjali from making such claims.
