In a significant operation, five militants were killed in an encounter with security forces in the Kulgam district of Jammu and Kashmir. The encounter took place on the night of December 19, 2024, as security personnel launched a counter-terrorism operation in the region, which has been a hotspot for militant activity in recent months.
“OP KADER, Kulgam. Based on specific intelligence input regarding the presence of terrorists, a Joint Operation was launched by the Indian Army and J-K police at Kader, Kulgam. Suspicious activity was observed by vigilant troops and on being challenged, terrorists opened indiscriminate and heavy volumes of fire. Own troops effectively retaliated. Operation is in progress,” Indian Army’s Chinar Corps said in a post on X.
According to the Jammu and Kashmir Police, the operation was carried out after receiving credible intelligence about the presence of armed militants in the area. The security forces, including the Indian Army and Jammu and Kashmir Police, cordoned off the area and launched a search operation. As the forces zeroed in on the suspected hideout, the militants opened fire, leading to an intense gunfight.
During the encounter, five militants were neutralized, and their bodies were recovered from the site. The militants were reportedly affiliated with a local terror outfit, though their identities have not been fully confirmed at this time. The operation was carried out with precision, and no security personnel were reported injured.
The police also stated that a large cache of arms and ammunition, including assault rifles and explosives, was recovered from the encounter site. The security forces have praised the bravery and coordination exhibited by the personnel involved in the operation.
The successful elimination of the militants is seen as a significant achievement in the ongoing counter-terrorism efforts in Jammu and Kashmir.
