Vice-President Dhankhar Defends Judicial System Amid International Criticism Over Kejriwal’s Arrest

In a staunch defense of India’s judicial system, Vice-President Jagdeep Dhankhar asserted its fairness and independence amidst international scrutiny following the arrest of Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal. Dhankhar’s remarks came in response to comments from the United States, Germany, and the United Nations regarding Kejriwal’s arrest in connection to a contentious liquor policy in the national capital.

India reacted swiftly to the comments, summoning a senior US diplomat and the German deputy chief of mission. Reports indicated that the US State Department voiced support for a fair legal process for Kejriwal, prompting India to lodge a strong protest against Germany’s foreign ministry.

Addressing an event organized by a Bar association, Dhankhar emphasized India’s robust judicial mechanism, urging citizens to uphold nationalism and resist external lecturing on judicial matters. He called upon the youth to counter anti-national narratives on social media and other platforms, asserting India’s sovereignty in its judicial affairs.

Speaking at the Indian Institute of Public Administration, Dhankhar reiterated the strength of India’s democratic principles and judicial system, emphasizing that they cannot be compromised by any individual or group. He defended the judiciary’s role, highlighting its impartiality and dedication even in controversial cases.

In response to international criticism, Dhankhar emphasized India’s democratic values and called upon other nations to focus on their own internal affairs. He dismissed assertions of discrimination in India’s Citizenship (Amendment) Act, stating that the law is not biased.

The arrest of Kejriwal by the Enforcement Directorate on March 21 in connection to a money laundering case related to the Delhi excise policy has sparked debates and international attention. Kejriwal remains in custody until April 1.
