Trump Calls Tesla’s India Factory Plan ‘Unfair’ to U.S.

Former U.S. President Donald Trump has criticized Tesla’s potential plan to set up a manufacturing facility in India, calling it “unfair” to the United States. Speaking on The Sean Hannity Show on Tuesday, Trump expressed concerns over India’s high tariffs on imported vehicles and emphasized the need for reciprocal tariffs.

Trump’s remarks came just days after Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to the U.S., during which trade issues were discussed. Addressing India’s tariff policies, Trump stated, “Every country in the world takes advantage of us, and they do it with tariffs… It is impossible to sell a car, practically, in, as an example, India.”

Tesla CEO Elon Musk has long criticized India’s nearly 100% import tariff on electric vehicles, which protects local manufacturers like Tata Motors. However, in March, India unveiled a new EV policy that slashed import duties to 15% for companies investing at least $500 million and committing to build a local factory.

Recent reports from Reuters indicate that Tesla has shortlisted locations for showrooms in New Delhi and Mumbai and has posted job listings for 13 mid-level positions in India. Currently, the company does not manufacture vehicles in the country.

Trump reiterated his stance on trade fairness, stating, “Now, if he [Musk] built the factory in India, that’s okay, but that’s unfair to us. It’s very unfair.” He also stressed the need for reciprocal tariffs, hinting at broader trade policy measures if he were to return to office.

With Trump’s continued advocacy for equal trade policies, concerns over potential tariff wars have resurfaced, adding another layer of complexity to U.S.-India trade relations.
