The Team India announced the squad for the white-ball tour of Sri Lanka but a big news is Suryakumar Yadav is not part of that lineup. While the attacking batsman would’ve been happy to get the team’s captaincy in T20Is, however a damper is that from the ODI squad he is out.
Suryakumar was a part of India’s ODI World Cup squad in 2023. However, he failed to repay the trust that selectors showed in him.
With just six ODIs to be played before the ICC Champions Trophy next year, the selectors want to give other players a chance. According to the media reports, the name of Sunrisers Hyderabad all-rounder Nitish Reddy is reportedly being looked at, especially because of the 3-dimensional skillset he brings to the team. Although Hardik Pandya is India’s premier seam-bowling all-rounder in white-ball cricket, he is not part of the ODI series against Sri Lanka but might return for future assignments.
Both India’s ODI captain Rohit Sharma and head coach Gautam Gambhir are known for their strategic approach to selection. In this context, Axar Patel and Washington Sundar have emerged as strong options in white-ball cricket, leading to the exclusion of Ravindra Jadeja.
For the Sri Lanka series, Riyan Parag is a potential candidate for inclusion. Parag has proven his skills as a handy batter and a useful bowler, with consistent performances in the Vijay Hazare Trophy. However, more experienced players like Axar Patel and Washington Sundar might take precedence in the squad.
