In a significant development, the Supreme Court has agreed to consider a plea filed by the Tamil Nadu government challenging Governor RN Ravi’s decision to deny the appointment of senior DMK leader K Ponmudi as a minister in the state cabinet.
Governor Ravi recently declined to re-induct Ponmudi, a former Higher Education Minister, into the state cabinet, citing concerns about constitutional morality. This decision sparked controversy and prompted the state government to take legal action.
A bench comprising Chief Justice D Y Chandrachud and justices JB Pardiwala and Manoj Misra took cognizance of the urgency in the matter during a hearing. Senior advocate Abhishek Singhvi, representing the state government, emphasized the need for prompt judicial intervention.
“Please send an email. I will look into the email,” remarked Chief Justice Chandrachud, indicating the court’s readiness to address the matter promptly.
Governor Ravi justified his decision in a letter to Chief Minister MK Stalin, highlighting that the apex court had only suspended Ponmudi’s conviction through an interim order. Despite this, the state government reinstated Ponmudi as a legislator following the Supreme Court’s decision to suspend his conviction in a disproportionate assets case.
