SC Stays Madras HC Order Against Isha Yoga Centre, Transfers Case to Itself

The Supreme Court on Thursday, October 3, restrained the Tamil Nadu Police from taking further action against the Isha Yoga Centre, run by spiritual leader Sadhguru in Coimbatore. This decision came after the Isha Foundation filed an appeal against a Madras High Court directive which had instructed the Tamil Nadu government to provide details of all criminal cases registered against the Centre.

A three-judge bench, led by Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud, passed the stay order and transferred the petition from the Madras High Court to the Supreme Court. The Tamil Nadu Police has been directed to submit a status report on the investigations to the apex court, with the matter now scheduled for the next hearing on October 18.

This development follows a large-scale police operation on Tuesday, when around 150 police personnel entered the Isha Foundation’s ashram in Coimbatore as part of the investigation. The raid occurred just one day after the Madras High Court had called for a report on all criminal cases linked to the Foundation, raising the urgency of the legal inquiry.

The Supreme Court’s stay order provides temporary relief to the Foundation, which had argued that the police actions and court directives were unwarranted.

Further developments on the case are expected during the next hearing on October 18.
