Ricky Ponting Predicts Australia Will Win 3-1 in the 2024-25 Border-Gavaskar Trophy Series

Former Australian captain Ricky Ponting has weighed in on the much-anticipated Border-Gavaskar Trophy, predicting a 3-1 victory for Australia in the five-match Test series against India. Set to kick off on November 22 in Perth, the series will feature further clashes in Adelaide, Brisbane, Melbourne, and Sydney.

Ponting, who remains Australia’s leading run-scorer in both Tests and ODIs, believes the hosts are primed to reclaim the trophy after a decade. He expects India to win one Test match in the series, but he views Australia’s experience and home advantage as crucial factors in their favor.

“I think India will win a Test match somewhere through the five Test matches,” Ponting shared in the latest episode of The ICC Review. “But I still think now, Australia probably look a bit more settled, a bit more experienced, and we know that they’re a very hard team to beat at home. So, I’ll stick with the 3-1.”

Ponting had made a similar prediction back in August, backing the 2023 World Test Championship (WTC) winners to capitalize on their current momentum. Australia currently leads the ICC Test rankings and sits atop the WTC 2023-25 points table, having won four of their five home matches in this cycle.

India, meanwhile, faces the challenge of bouncing back after an unprecedented series loss to New Zealand at home, where they suffered a historic 3-0 defeat. To secure a place in the WTC 2025 final, India will need a dominant performance, with a 4-0 or 5-0 series victory necessary to guarantee qualification.

Australia last defeated India on home soil in 2014-15 with a 2-0 scoreline. However, in the last two series on Australian turf, the Baggy Greens suffered two narrow defeats to India. With Australia eager to end India’s recent dominance, this series promises to be a fierce contest.

The first Test in Perth on November 22 will set the stage for one of the most closely watched Test series in recent years.
