Rahul Gandhi Criticizes Merit System, Calls for Caste Census; BJP Hits Back

Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Thursday raised concerns over the fairness of India’s merit system, arguing that Dalits and tribals continue to face challenges in accessing education and governance. Calling the existing system “unfair and completely flawed,” the Leader of Opposition criticized those opposing the caste census, accusing them of attempting to conceal the truth.

“There is a completely flawed concept of merit where social position is mistaken for capability. To claim that our education system or bureaucratic recruitment processes are fair to Dalits, OBCs, and tribals is simply a fallacy,” Gandhi said during an interaction with Professor Sukhadeo Thorat, as quoted by Moneycontrol.

He further asserted that the prevailing idea of merit is shaped by an upper-caste narrative and described it as inherently unjust. Recalling Dr. B.R. Ambedkar’s historic Mahad Satyagraha, he emphasized the importance of a caste census in exposing the reality of inequality and discrimination.

Gandhi also shared a video of his discussion on X, remarking, “The fight for rightful share that began 98 years ago continues. On March 20, 1927, Babasaheb Ambedkar challenged caste discrimination through the Mahad Satyagraha—not just for access to water, but for equality and respect.”

In response, BJP National Spokesperson CR Kesavan condemned Gandhi’s remarks, accusing him of displaying a “nepotistic and feudal mindset.” He alleged that the Congress has a history of undermining meritorious leaders from SC, ST, and OBC communities who have risen through hard work and dedication.

“The dynastic Congress has historically insulted and sidelined leaders from marginalized communities. The party has always harbored an anti-Dalit mindset and continues to suppress merit,” Kesavan said.
