NYU Abu Dhabi Student Deported for Pro-Palestinian Statement at Graduation

In a dramatic incident that has sparked controversy and criticism, a New York University Abu Dhabi (NYUAD) student was deported from the United Arab Emirates (UAE) after shouting “Free Palestine” during the university’s graduation ceremony. The student, wearing a black-and-white scarf, made the statement as he walked across the stage to receive his diploma in May. The incident, which recently came to light, underscores the UAE’s delicate balancing act between its diplomatic relations with Israel and the ongoing conflict in Gaza.

The deportation occurred amid heightened sensitivity in the UAE regarding expressions of support for Palestinians. While the UAE provides aid to Palestinians, it has not experienced the mass protests seen in other parts of the Arab world. At NYUAD, students report facing restrictions on discussing the Gaza war in both academic and cultural settings. Those wearing keffiyehs have been barred from events, and the university has enforced strict protocols, including a ban on displaying the Palestinian flag or wearing cultural attire such as scarves during the commencement ceremony.

Multiple students recounted similar experiences of constraints leading up to graduation, with planned activities like fundraisers and vigils for Gaza victims being affected. The university sent an email to students prior to the ceremony, emphasizing the prohibition of cultural attire, including the Palestinian scarf.

The student who defied this directive was detained and subsequently deported, a move that has drawn sharp criticism from the American Association of University Professors (AAUP). The AAUP condemned the action as an infringement on academic freedom and free speech. Allegations have also emerged that NYUAD has not adequately protected students and staff from detention and deportation, particularly those from non-Western backgrounds who may be under heightened surveillance.

Despite these controversies, NYUAD maintains that it operates with academic autonomy while complying with local laws. The university acknowledged that it must adhere to the UAE’s regulations, including protocols for graduation ceremonies.

The incident occurs in the context of the ongoing Gaza war, which has seen thousands of casualties since it erupted with the October 7 Hamas attack on Israel. The conflict has drawn international condemnation and sparked anger among UAE residents, including Emiratis and other nationals, as it continues to escalate.

The UAE, while hosting robust diplomatic ties with Israel, including an embassy and consulate, and facilitating daily flights to Tel Aviv, faces increasing domestic pressure as the war in Gaza rages on.
