Wrestler Vinesh Phogat’s petition for a joint silver medal at the 2024 Paris Olympics has been dismissed by the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS). The CAS issued an initial order on August 14, rejecting Phogat’s application, which was filed on August 7. The detailed order will be released later.
Phogat faced disqualification on the day of the women’s 50kg wrestling final at the Olympics after being found 100 grams over the weight limit during the weigh-in. Following her disqualification, Phogat sought a joint silver medal through CAS, an international arbitration body established to resolve sports-related disputes.
The Indian Olympic Association (IOA) expressed its shock and disappointment at the CAS decision. PT Usha, IOA President, criticized the ruling, stating that the decision has significant implications for Phogat and raises concerns about the interpretation of weight limit rules.
“The decision to dismiss Vinesh’s application for a shared silver medal in the women’s 50kg category has profound impacts not only on her career but also on the broader sporting community,” the IOA stated. “The marginal weight discrepancy and its severe consequences highlight concerns about the fairness and clarity of regulations.”
The IOA called for a deeper examination of the rules and is exploring additional legal avenues. It emphasized the need for regulations that better account for the physiological and psychological pressures athletes face, particularly female athletes.
“The IOA firmly believes that the total disqualification for a minor weight infraction, especially on the final day of weigh-ins, merits further scrutiny. Our legal team highlighted these issues in their submissions,” the IOA’s statement read. “This case underscores the need for more humane and equitable standards in sports.”
The IOA reaffirmed its support for Phogat and pledged to continue advocating for justice and fairness in sports. It will assist Phogat in exploring further legal options and remain committed to upholding athletes’ rights and dignity.
“We appreciate the continued support of our stakeholders, athletes, and the public during this challenging time,” the IOA concluded.
