Models Face Backlash Over Bold Outfits at Durga Puja Pandal in Kolkata

Three Kolkata-based models have sparked controversy after photos of them wearing bold outfits during Durga Puja celebrations went viral on social media. The trio, including Hemoshree Bhadra and Sannati Mitra—both former Miss Kolkata titleholders—along with a friend, have come under fire for their fashion choices at the religious event. The incident has triggered a heated debate on social media, with many criticizing the models for their attire, calling it inappropriate for a sacred occasion.

In the images circulating online, one model is seen in a form-fitting black gown, while another wore a short orange dress paired with high boots. The third individual chose a red blouse and black pants. Sannati Mitra shared the pictures on her Instagram, describing their style as “rebellious.” However, her attempt to portray their look as a bold statement did not sit well with many social media users, who quickly expressed their discontent.

Sharing her thoughts in a now-controversial Instagram post, Sannati wrote, “It was so rebellious, we never thought it was possible. Being a girl, we always knew our body was ‘bad,’ but life is like that—it gives new examples and experiences.” The post received swift backlash, with one user commenting, “I feel ashamed for her dressing in a holy place,” while another added, “Stop this type of vulgarity on puja mandap. This is shameful.”

Critics on social media argued that their outfits were disrespectful to the religious nature of the festival. “This is not women empowerment. This is making fun of our Sanatan dharm,” one comment read, while another said, “At least wear good clothes in front of God.”

The controversy further escalated when a video of the models dancing and enjoying themselves at different Durga Puja pandals in Kolkata surfaced. Activist Deepika Bhardwaj and many others criticized the women for drawing attention to themselves in what they described as an inappropriate manner at a religious event.

Despite the backlash, the models have not yet issued a response to the criticism. Meanwhile, the five-day Durga Puja festival, which began on October 9, continues to focus on rituals, prayers, and cultural celebrations in honor of the goddess Durga.
