Ministry of Information and Broadcasting Blocks 18 OTT Platforms for ‘Vulgar’ Content

In a decisive move aimed at curbing the proliferation of explicit content on digital platforms, the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting (I&B) has taken action against 18 Over-The-Top (OTT) platforms. The crackdown comes in response to concerns over the dissemination of obscene, vulgar, and potentially pornographic material.

According to a press release issued by the ministry, a total of 19 websites, 10 applications, and 57 social media handles associated with these OTT platforms have been blocked nationwide. The content in question has been found to be in violation of several legal statutes, including the Information Technology Act, the Indian Penal Code, and the Indecent Representation of Women (Prohibition) Act.

Union Minister Anurag Thakur, through the I&B release, has reiterated the obligation of these platforms to uphold standards of decency and refrain from promoting obscenity, vulgarity, and abuse under the guise of ‘creative expression’. This action underscores the government’s commitment to ensuring that digital content adheres to regulatory frameworks and societal norms.

The move comes amidst growing concerns about the impact of explicit content on viewers, particularly young audiences, and reflects the government’s determination to regulate digital media platforms effectively. It also signals a broader shift towards greater accountability and responsibility within the rapidly evolving landscape of online entertainment.
