India Initiates Fencing of Strategic India-Myanmar Border in Response to Escalating Tensions

The Union Home Minister Amit Shah recently announced the initiation of fencing along India’s open borders with Myanmar and Bangladesh. The Border Roads Organisation (BRO) has been assigned the crucial task of securing a major portion of the strategic India-Myanmar border.

The Ministry of Home Affairs has identified approximately 1,700 kilometers of fencing that needs to be implemented along the India-Myanmar border. BRO’s Additional Director General (East), PKH Singh, revealed that the organization has already completed fencing a 10-kilometer stretch in Manipur, which was subsequently handed over to the Assam Rifles.

This move by the Indian government follows heightened tensions as hundreds of Myanmar soldiers reportedly crossed the border, seeking refuge in Mizoram’s Lawngtlai district after their camps were captured by the Arakan Army (AA) militants – an ethnic armed group operating in the western Myanmar state of Rakhine.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah emphasized the need to protect the open border with Myanmar, citing the recent intensification of fighting between rebel forces in Myanmar and the junta-regime. “Our borders with Myanmar are an open border. The Narendra Modi government has decided to protect the India-Myanmar border, and we will work towards building a fence in the entire border area (with Myanmar) on par with the borders with Bangladesh,” Shah stated.
