German Chancellor Olaf Scholz Applauds India’s Push for Peace in Ukraine, Calls for Political Solutions to Global Conflicts

German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, currently on a three-day official visit to India, commended India’s efforts to mediate peace in the Russia-Ukraine conflict, urging for constructive dialogue with all parties involved to seek a peaceful resolution. He also endorsed Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s commitment to international peace during their bilateral meeting.

In a message on X, formerly Twitter, Scholz said, “I expressly support India in advocating a lasting, just peace in Ukraine and using its reliable relations with all parties to contribute to it.” He underscored the importance of partners being able to discuss key geopolitical issues directly, noting India’s role as a trusted voice for peace.

Chancellor Scholz’s remarks align with recent acknowledgments by other global leaders, including Russian President Vladimir Putin and Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, who both praised PM Modi’s stance on the Ukraine crisis. Putin recently expressed gratitude for Modi’s friendship and India’s neutral, peace-oriented approach, while Meloni emphasized the potential role of countries like India and China in resolving the Ukraine conflict.

Addressing the 18th Asia-Pacific Conference of German Business 2024 in New Delhi, Scholz highlighted the importance of political solutions to ensure global stability, emphasizing the challenges posed by conflicts in the Middle East, South China Sea, and East China Sea. “The Middle East remains a constant source of tension and a reminder of the human cost of division because of the world’s inability to reach political solutions,” Scholz stated.

Prime Minister Modi echoed this commitment to peace during the discussions with Scholz, reaffirming India’s dedication to resolving conflicts. Modi emphasized, “India has always believed that problems cannot be solved by war and is ready to make every possible contribution for the restoration of peace.”

India has also remained actively engaged with Russia, as seen in Modi’s dialogue with Putin ahead of the BRICS Summit in Kazan. During their meeting, Modi reiterated India’s commitment to facilitating peace in Ukraine, stating, “We believe that the problems should be resolved in a peaceful manner. All our efforts give priority to humanity, and India is ready to provide all possible cooperation.”
