Farmers’ ‘Delhi Chalo’ March On, Talks With Centre Remain Unresolved

Punjab farmers who are protesting are determined to march to Delhi today because their meeting with Union ministers for more than five hours was fruitless. The farmers’ primary demand—the highest possible MSP —has not been met.
The farmers’ meeting with Union ministers in Chandigarh lasted nearly until midnight. The discussions with the farmer leaders were facilitated by Ministers of Agriculture Arjun Munda and Food and Consumer Affairs Piyush Goyal.

After 11 pm on Monday, the parties reached a consensus to repeal the Electricity Act 2020, compensate farmers who lost their lives in Lakhimpur Kheri, Uttar Pradesh, and drop any legal action taken against them during the farmers’ movement.
However, there was disagreement over the three main demands, which were to waive farmer loans, enact legislation ensuring a Minimum Support Price for all crops, and carry out the recommendations of the Swaminathan Commission.

The ‘Delhi Chalo’ march has begun, declared Sarwan Singh Pandher of the Kisan Mazdoor Sangharsh Committee, after the meeting, which concluded shortly before midnight. “The government had committed to putting half of our requests in writing two years prior. We desired a peaceful resolution to the problem. But the administration isn’t being real. Reporters were told by a farmers’ representative that “they just want to waste time.”
