Nepal, situated in a seismically active region where the Indian and Eurasian tectonic plates converge to form the Himalayas, frequently experiences earthquakes. Lobuche is located in the eastern part of Nepal, near the Khumbu Glacier, about 150 kilometers from Kathmandu and 8.5 kilometers southwest of Everest Base Camp.
The epicenter of the quake was identified in Xizang (Tibet Autonomous Region), near Nepal, with coordinates of latitude 28.86°N and longitude 87.51°E at a depth of 10 kilometers. The National Centre for Seismology (NCS) recorded the earthquake at 6:35 AM IST. The NCS issued a tweet with details: “EQ of M: 7.1, On: 07/01/2025 06:35:18 IST, Lat: 28.86 N, Long: 87.51 E, Depth: 10 km, Location: Xizang.”
