EAM Jaishankar: Galwan Valley Clash Sparked Abnormal Troop Deployment along LAC

In a recent address at an event organized by the Indian Chamber of Commerce, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar voiced apprehensions regarding the abnormal deployment of forces along the Line of Actual Control (LAC) with China. Describing the situation as concerning, Jaishankar emphasized that the security of the nation should not be overlooked.

Highlighting historical context, Jaishankar referenced former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi’s efforts to normalize ties with China in 1988, which set the stage for discussions on boundary differences while maintaining peace and tranquility along the border. However, he noted a significant shift in 2020 when China, in violation of multiple agreements, escalated tensions by deploying a large number of forces near the Indian border, coinciding with the Covid lockdown period.

The Galwan Valley clash in 2020 resulted in the loss of 20 Indian soldiers, marking the most significant confrontation in over four decades between the two nations. In response, Jaishankar revealed that India countered by deploying forces, resulting in an abnormal positioning along the LAC.

Jaishankar also addressed economic concerns, questioning India’s heavy reliance on Chinese imports and advocating for greater self-sufficiency in critical sectors. He highlighted a global trend towards shorter and more reliable supply chains, stressing the need for strategic economic decisions to ensure national security.

Regarding India’s relations with Russia, Jaishankar expressed positivity, citing economic opportunities due to Russia’s abundant natural resources.

Reflecting on India’s economic progress, Jaishankar praised recent achievements but acknowledged past neglect of manufacturing and infrastructure sectors. He criticized outdated policies that hindered growth and emphasized the importance of fostering a conducive environment for job creation and economic expansion.
