In a dramatic incident during a live news broadcast, Doordarshan anchor Lopamudra Sinha collapsed on air while reporting on the heatwave conditions prevailing in West Bengal. Sinha, stationed at the Kolkata branch of Doordarshan, took to Facebook to share her harrowing experience.
According to Sinha’s account on Facebook, she had been feeling unwell prior to the broadcast but decided to proceed after drinking a glass of water in hopes of alleviating her discomfort. However, due to the nature of the broadcast, she was unable to hydrate adequately, exacerbating her condition.
As Sinha soldiered on with the news coverage, her health deteriorated rapidly, culminating in her blackout during a segment discussing the heatwave. She described experiencing a sudden drop in blood pressure, causing her speech to slur and her vision to blur, ultimately leading to her collapse on air.
The incident sheds light on the severe heatwave conditions gripping parts of West Bengal, as reported by the India Meteorological Department (IMD). Officials have warned of “severe heatwave” conditions persisting in South and North 24 Parganas, Purba and Paschim Bardhaman, Purba and Paschim Medinipur, Purulia, Jhargram, Birbhum, Murshidabad, and Bankura districts until April 22.
Furthermore, the IMD has indicated that Odisha is also facing intense heatwave conditions, with isolated pockets experiencing severe heatwave conditions. The scorching temperatures have already claimed a life, with Odisha reporting its first sunstroke-related death on April 15. Laxmikanta Sahu (62), a resident of Maheshpur in Balasore district, succumbed to sunstroke, highlighting the grave consequences of the ongoing heatwave.
