At least five people have died as massive wildfires continue to blaze across Los Angeles, with several fires remaining mostly uncontained. Authorities have issued evacuation orders in multiple areas, with the latest being the Sunset Fire in the Hollywood Hills. Meanwhile, the Palisades Fire, which has scorched the coastal region between Malibu and Santa Monica, has exploded to over 15,800 acres, destroying at least 1,000 structures and becoming the most destructive wildfire in Los Angeles County history.
As the fires rage on, approximately 1.5 million customers in Southern California are without power, with nearly a million of those affected residing in Los Angeles County, according to PowerOutage.us.
In response to the crisis, U.S. President Joe Biden has canceled his planned trip to Rome, Italy, originally scheduled for the final days of his presidency. The White House issued a statement explaining that Biden made the decision after returning from Los Angeles, where he had met with police, fire, and emergency personnel battling the wildfires. During his visit, the president approved a Major Disaster declaration for California to expedite federal assistance for affected communities.
“As the fires continue to devastate communities, President Biden is focused on mobilizing life-saving and life-sustaining resources across the region,” the White House said. The president has directed the Department of Defense to swiftly deploy additional firefighting personnel and resources, including air support, to bolster California’s firefighting efforts.
Los Angeles Fire Department Chief Kristin Crowley described the conditions as some of the most extreme fire weather on record. “Southern California is continuing to endure some of the most historic fire conditions on record. Extreme fire weather, driven by strong and erratic winds and low humidity, have ignited multiple fires across our region,” Crowley said.
Among the many affected by the fires is actor and comedian Billy Crystal, who confirmed that he lost his home in the Pacific Palisades community. “We know in time it will rise again,” he said. “Words cannot describe the enormity of the devastation we are witnessing and experiencing. We ache for our friends and neighbors who have also lost their homes and businesses in this tragedy.”
The historic former home of American humorist Will Rogers was also destroyed by the Palisades Fire overnight. Built in 1929, the iconic house was reduced to rubble, with only two chimneys left standing. California State Parks Director Armando Quintero expressed sorrow over the loss. “California State Parks mourns the loss of these treasured natural and cultural resources, and our hearts go out to everyone impacted by the devastating fires in the Los Angeles area,” Quintero said.
The wildfires, fueled by strong winds and dry conditions, have left a trail of destruction across Southern California. Authorities and residents alike are now bracing for the challenging days ahead as firefighting efforts continue to battle the blazes and communities begin the long road to recovery.
