Day 2 Of Farmers’ Protest: Massive Traffic Jams At Delhi Borders

After a night stop, farmers protesting will soon resume their march towards Delhi. With a list of their main demands, a new attempt will be made to advance against a massive security deployment and reach the capital.
The farmers who were protesting had issued a “ceasefire” last night and said they would “try again” today. A sizable security force has been mobilized and prohibition orders have been tightened out of concern that the farmers would attempt to breach the barricades today.
Tear gas and water cannons were used on Tuesday to stop the farmers from crossing the Punjab-Haryana border, evoking scenes from the 2020–21 protest. The protest three years ago had lasted 13 months, choking the Delhi borders.

With tire deflators and concrete blocks manning the borders, the police have defended Delhi. However, the action yesterday took place at the Shambhu border, which separates Punjab and Haryana. This was the first line of defence.

Public gatherings have been banned in entire Delhi for a month and restrictions imposed on vehicle movements across the border. The police are also checking all vehicles to ensure protesters are able to cross into the city.

The farmers claim they are ready for the long journey, having enough fuel to get to Delhi and enough food for half a year. A list of demands is the reason behind the farmers’ protests. With the exception of three crucial demands—a farm loan waiver, a law on MSP, and the execution of the Swaminathan Commission’s recommendation—the government has complied with the majority of their requests.
