A 58-year-old government school teacher from Agra, identified as Malti Verma, died of cardiac arrest after allegedly receiving a threatening call from cyber fraudsters claiming her daughter was involved in a sex scandal, her family reported on Thursday.
The incident took place on September 30, when Verma, who worked at a Junior High School in Achhnera, Agra, received a WhatsApp call at noon. The fraudsters posed as police officers and demanded Rs 1 lakh to keep her daughter’s identity hidden from the public, her son Deepanshu Rajput told PTI.
Rajput recounted the terrifying sequence of events, stating, “After receiving the call, my mother immediately informed me about it. I checked the phone number and realized it was a fraudulent call by cyber criminals.” He further mentioned that after speaking to his sister, everything appeared normal, and he tried to reassure his mother.
Despite being assured that the call was a scam, Verma could not shake her anxiety. After returning from school, she complained of chest pain and increased anxiety. Her condition worsened, and the family rushed her to a hospital, where doctors declared her dead due to cardiac arrest.
The family has lodged a complaint with the Jagdishpura police. Station in-charge Anandveer Singh confirmed receiving the complaint and assured that action will be taken based on the family’s claims.
