Sonia Gandhi, the former president of the Congress, will present her nomination from Rajasthan for the Rajya Sabha elections on Wednesday, according to the Congress party.
The five-time Lok Sabha MP is likely to opt for the Rajasthan seat currently held by former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh. The Congress is comfortably placed to win Rajya Sabha seats from Karnataka, Telangana, Rajasthan and Himachal Pradesh.
Sonia could have selected Telangana or Karnataka, two southern states where the party had its government. Nevertheless, since her son Rahul Gandhi already held a Lok Sabha seat (Wayanad) from the southern state of Kerala, she desired to represent a state from the Hindi heartland, according to a news report.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi had recently made a jab at the Congress, saying that its leaders lacked the courage to run for office and were instead seeking to join Parliament through the Rajya Sabha.
However, Sonia has chosen to withdraw from the Lok Sabha elections for health-related reasons. Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, her daughter and the general secretary of the party, will be replacing her mother from Raebareli in the coming Lok Sabha elections.
The biennial Rajya Sabha elections are scheduled to be held on February 27 for 56 seats from 15 states. The last date for filing the nomination is February 15. The Congress, which is in a position to win around 10 seats, is yet to announce nominees.
