Indian cricket team captain Rohit Sharma is reportedly set to announce his retirement following the conclusion of the ongoing five-match Test series against Australia, as per a report. The report indicates that discussions have already taken place between the BCCI top officials and selectors, and it is highly unlikely that Rohit will change his decision. While the exact timing of the announcement is still uncertain, it is expected to occur after the final Test in Sydney. However, if India manages to qualify for the World Test Championship (WTC) Final, Rohit might try to persuade the selectors to allow him to continue.
Rohit, visibly shaken after India’s heavy loss in the fourth Test, admitted to feeling “disturbed” and revealed that there are personal issues he needs to address, in addition to the team’s collective struggles, amid growing scrutiny of his form.
With only 31 runs from six innings across three Tests, Rohit’s performance has been subpar, with his tally just one more than the 30 wickets taken by Jasprit Bumrah in the series. Calls for his retirement from Test cricket have been escalating, and the Sydney Test may mark his final appearance in whites. Despite this, Rohit is determined not to exit without a fight.
Questions about his future as both a batsman and a captain continue to linger, but Rohit is not offering easy answers. “I am where I am today. There’s no point dwelling on what has happened in the past. Yes, a few results haven’t gone our way, and as captain, that’s disappointing,” he said, trying to mask his frustration after the 184-run defeat. However, it was clear that he is far from content with his current situation.
“A lot of the things I’m trying to do aren’t falling into place as I would like them to,” Rohit admitted. “Mentally, it’s disturbing, without a doubt. When you come here and try to do things successfully and they don’t work out, it’s a big disappointment. But for now, this is where I stand.”
