The Uttar Pradesh police have arrested two young men, identified as Deepak and Pawan, in connection with the deaths of two teenage girls in Farrukhabad. The bodies of the girls, aged 15 and 18, were found hanging from a tree in a mango orchard near their village on Tuesday morning.
According to police reports, the two girls had gone to attend a Janmashtami program on Monday evening but did not return home. The following morning, their bodies were discovered hanging from a tree, with their necks tied at each end of a ‘dupatta’ that was slung across a branch.
Preliminary investigations and post-mortem reports suggest that the incident is a case of double suicide. Police sources indicate that the girls may have taken this extreme step after discovering that the boys, with whom they were reportedly in a romantic relationship, were cheating on them with other girls. Deepak and Pawan have been taken into custody and are expected to be presented in court on Saturday.
However, the families of the deceased girls have refuted the suicide theory, alleging that the minors were murdered. The father of one of the victims has publicly called the police investigation “fake,” demanding a thorough and fair probe into the incident.
The case has sparked widespread outrage, with political leaders demanding a swift and transparent investigation. Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav criticized the BJP-led Uttar Pradesh government, stating that incidents like these create a horrific atmosphere in society and must be addressed with urgency.
Congress leader Rahul Gandhi also weighed in on the matter, emphasizing that “security is the right of every daughter of India and justice is the right of every suffering family.” He has called for a comprehensive investigation to ensure justice for the victims.
