Sandip Ghosh, the former principal of Kolkata’s Kar Hospital, already embroiled in controversy following the alleged rape and murder of a 31-year-old trainee doctor on the hospital premises, is now facing additional allegations of corruption and illegal activities.
Akhtar Ali, the former deputy superintendent of RG Kar Hospital, has lodged a complaint with the Kolkata Police, accusing Ghosh of running a nexus that facilitated various illegal activities, including taking bribes from students, trafficking medical waste, and selling unclaimed bodies. News18 has obtained a copy of Ali’s complaint, though the allegations have not been independently verified.
Ali claims that Ghosh received substantial bribes from students in exchange for passing exam grades, sold bio-medical waste, such as gloves and syringes, to contacts in Bangladesh, and pocketed a 20% bribe on all hospital tenders. He further alleged that Ghosh sold unclaimed bodies and wielded significant influence to suppress any investigations into his activities.
“I complained to the vigilance department in 2023, but no action was taken. Instead, I was transferred for being a whistle-blower,” said Ali. He plans to approach the court to seek justice, stating that despite his efforts, no action was taken against Ghosh due to his power and connections within the hospital.
The new allegations come as Ghosh is already under scrutiny by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), which is probing the death of the trainee doctor found on August 9. The CBI has questioned Ghosh multiple times, noting inconsistencies in his responses. The agency is investigating whether Ghosh was aware of any pressures the victim was facing at RG Kar Hospital and whether there were any complaints made regarding the same.
In a related development, the Supreme Court criticized Ghosh for attempting to portray the rape-murder as a suicide and questioned his delay in allowing the victim’s parents to see her body. Additionally, the court took issue with Ghosh’s appointment as principal of National Medical College just hours after resigning from RG Kar, an appointment that has drawn widespread condemnation, including from the Calcutta High Court.
