The budget proposals totaling Rs 2,04,918 crore were presented by Punjab Finance Minister Harpal Cheema on Tuesday, the third day of the Punjab Assembly’s budget session.
The Aam Aadmi Party government in the state is currently presenting its third budget.
According to Cheema, the state government has not imposed any new taxes. The government hopes to collect a total of Rs 1,03,936 crore in revenue in 2024–25, of which Rs 58,900 crore will come from own tax revenue.
According to him, the state will also receive Rs 11,748 crore in grants in aid from the Centre and its share of Rs 22,041 crore in central taxes.
Cheema said ₹13,784 crore has been earmarked for the agriculture sector and ₹16,987 crore for the education sector.
The budget has an allocation of ₹575 crore for crop diversification schemes. “
The dire fiscal health of the state prevented the government from announcing the much-anticipated financial assistance of Rs 1,000 for every woman above the age of eighteen.
During his speech, Cheema targeted the central government, saying, “It is also my responsibility to apprise this august House about the apathy shown by the Union government towards Punjab.The withholding of the rightful share of the state, totalling ₹8,000 crore approximately, on account of National Health Mission (NHM), Rural Development Fund (RDF), Mandi Development Fund (MDF), and Special Assistance to State for Capital Investment has directly affected developmental works and put additional burden on the state treasury,” he said.
