London-born Bangladeshi-origin Woman Shamima Begum Loses Legal Bid to Regain British Citizenship

Shamima Begum, a London-born woman of Bangladeshi descent who fled the UK at 15 to join ISIS, has failed in her latest attempt to reclaim British citizenship and return home, as ruled by the Court of Appeal on Friday.

Shamima Begum, now 24, faced yet another setback in her ongoing legal battle to return to the UK, as the Court of Appeal upheld the decision to bar her from reacquiring British citizenship. The Special Immigration Appeals Commission (SIAC) and the UK Supreme Court had previously ruled against her, citing concerns related to national security.

Begum, who currently resides in a detention camp in northern Syria, has been advocating to return to her home in east London. Despite her claims of not participating in ISIS atrocities, the court affirmed that she had made a calculated decision to travel to Syria and align herself with the terror group.

Represented by barrister Samantha Knights, Begum argued that the UK government failed to fulfill its legal obligations to a potential victim of trafficking. However, the court emphasized that national security was the primary concern in this case.

The tribunal’s decision, backed by then Home Secretary Sajid Javid, to revoke Begum’s British citizenship was considered integral to national security and was not subject to judicial review. Begum, often referred to as an “ISIS bride,” had married a Dutch member of the terror network in Syria and subsequently gave birth to three children, all of whom died.

Begum’s legal team attempted to establish her status as a victim of trafficking, but the tribunal ultimately concluded that the Home Secretary was not obligated to consider this aspect when revoking her citizenship.

While the British government suggested Begum could pursue Bangladeshi citizenship due to her heritage, her family maintains that she is British and has never held Bangladeshi citizenship.
