The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) has confirmed that 12 Indian nationals, among 126 reportedly misled into joining the Russian Army, have died while fighting in Ukraine. Sixteen others remain missing, while efforts are underway to secure the release and repatriation of those still trapped.
“We have been in constant communication with Russian authorities to ensure the safe release and return of Indian nationals caught in the conflict,” said MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal.
According to Jaiswal, 96 of the 126 identified Indian nationals have been discharged from the Russian armed forces and returned to India. However, 18 individuals remain in active combat, with the whereabouts of 16 categorized as “missing” by Russian authorities. “Sadly, 12 Indian nationals have lost their lives in combat,” he added.
The issue gained renewed attention earlier this week following the death of an Indian national from Kerala while fighting on the Russian frontlines. The MEA reiterated its commitment to addressing the matter, stating that it has strongly raised the issue with the Russian government.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi has personally intervened on multiple occasions, urging Russian President Vladimir Putin to expedite the discharge of Indian nationals. The issue was first raised during bilateral talks in July last year and reiterated during the 16th BRICS Summit in Kazan in October.
Efforts to ensure the safe return of all remaining Indian nationals continue as the government works closely with Russian authorities to resolve the situation.
