Amid growing speculation about Russian President Vladimir Putin’s health, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has claimed that Putin “will die soon.” His remark, reported by The Sun, comes as Russia intensifies its attacks on Ukraine.
Zelenskyy and French President Emmanuel Macron urged the United States to maintain a strong stance against Russia while Putin remains in power. The two leaders met on Wednesday to discuss peace efforts following a US-brokered ceasefire on Tuesday. They emphasized the importance of European unity and called on Russia to uphold peace agreements ahead of a key EU summit on Thursday.
Zelenskyy accused Putin of attempting to “divide the European Union from within,” referencing Hungary’s pro-Russia stance. However, he reiterated his belief that Putin’s time is limited.
Speculation over Putin’s health has been fuelled by visible physical symptoms, including a swollen face and tremors. Meanwhile, Russian forces continue their offensive, launching 117 strikes on Ukraine on Tuesday night. Despite the ongoing aggression, Zelenskyy expressed confidence that US pressure would eventually force Putin into an unconditional ceasefire.
Macron condemned Putin for distorting ceasefire terms while continuing attacks on Ukrainian territory, including civilian areas. He asserted that Russia cannot dictate peace conditions to Ukraine.
At Thursday’s EU summit, leaders will discuss potential support measures for Ukraine if a lasting ceasefire is achieved, including the possible deployment of EU peacekeepers. Macron cautioned that any attack on peacekeeping forces could escalate into direct conflict with Russia. He also announced an additional $2 billion in military aid to Ukraine, stressing that the war has entered a “decisive phase.”
