West Indies all-rounder Dwayne Bravo has announced his retirement from all forms of cricket after an injury cut short his farewell season in the Caribbean Premier League (CPL). As he approaches his 41st birthday next month, Bravo, the leading wicket-taker in T20 history, reflects on his illustrious career.
Bravo, who retired from international cricket in 2021 and concluded his Indian Premier League (IPL) career last year, has shifted his focus to coaching in recent times, representing the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) and Afghanistan.
In an emotional Instagram post, Bravo stated, “Today is the day I say goodbye to the game that has given me everything. From the age of five, I knew this was the sport I was destined to play. I dedicated my life to cricket, and in return, it provided the life I dreamed of for myself and my family. For that, I can’t thank you enough.”
Bravo was set to retire from the CPL at the end of the season but sustained an injury while attempting to catch a ball from St Lucia Kings captain Faf du Plessis. He left the field immediately and did not bowl, marking the end of his CPL journey. He batted at number 11 during his team’s unsuccessful chase of 219 runs.
Throughout his CPL career, Bravo played 107 matches, scoring 1,155 runs at an average of 20.62 and a strike rate of 129.33, while taking 129 wickets at an average of 23.02.
With a remarkable tally of 631 wickets in 582 T20 appearances, Bravo has set a benchmark in the format. “Twenty-one years as a professional cricketer has been an incredible journey, filled with many highs and a few lows,” he reflected. “As much as I’d love to keep going, my body can no longer endure the strain. I can’t risk letting down my teammates, fans, or the teams I represent. So, with a heavy heart, I officially announce my retirement. Today, the Champion bids farewell.”
Bravo had planned to participate in the UAE’s ILT20 after his CPL season but ultimately chose to retire instead. He expressed gratitude to his fans for their unwavering support throughout his career, stating, “Though this ending is bittersweet, I have no regrets. I look forward to my next chapter. Thank you all, and see you soon on the other side. With love, Sir Champion.”
