“Why Don’t You Wear a Suit?” Reporter Asks Zelenskyy at White House

What should have been a diplomatic milestone quickly descended into awkwardness and tension when US President Donald Trump appeared less than impressed with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s choice of clothing during their meeting on Friday at the White House. The two leaders had gathered to sign a crucial deal granting the United States access to rare-earth minerals in Ukraine, but the discussion veered off-track with Trump’s commentary on Zelenskyy’s attire.

As they greeted each other, Trump remarked, “Look, you’re all dressed up,” seemingly surprised by Zelenskyy’s more casual look. Later, when a reporter questioned the Ukrainian president’s lack of a suit, Trump lightened the moment, joking, “I do like your clothing by the way,” before adding, “I think he is a great guy.” However, the reporter’s persistent questioning—asking if Zelenskyy owned a suit—elicited laughter from both Trump and Vice President JD Vance.

Zelenskyy, unfazed, retorted with characteristic wit, “Do you have a problem?” The back-and-forth escalated when the reporter suggested that Zelenskyy wasn’t respecting the Oval Office’s dress code. Zelenskyy responded, “I will wear a costume after this war is finished… maybe something like yours. Maybe something better, maybe something cheaper.” The exchange, though lighthearted, highlighted an underlying tension between the two leaders.

The mood soured further during the official talks. Trump made it clear that he believes Zelenskyy isn’t ready for peace talks, claiming that Ukraine’s reliance on US support has given the country a significant advantage in negotiations with Russia. The statement revealed a disconnect between the two leaders, with Trump questioning Zelenskyy’s willingness to engage in peace talks if America remains involved.

In a post-meeting statement on Truth Social, Trump reflected on the meeting’s intensity: “We had a very meaningful meeting in the White House today. Much was learned that could never be understood without conversation under such fire and pressure. It’s amazing what comes out through emotion,” Trump wrote. He concluded that Zelenskyy “is not ready for Peace if America is involved,” emphasizing that Ukraine views US involvement as a negotiation edge.

What began as a diplomatic engagement devolved into a spectacle, with the discussion of attire setting the stage for deeper tensions between the two leaders—underscoring a broader fracture in their approach to the war and peace talks.
