A surprising discovery of a wad of currency notes under Congress MP Abhishek Manu Singhvi’s allotted Rajya Sabha seat has led to a major controversy during the ongoing Winter Session of Parliament. The incident, revealed by Rajya Sabha Chairman and Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar on Friday, has prompted a formal probe into the matter.
Addressing the House, Dhankhar disclosed that the cash was recovered during a routine anti-sabotage check after Thursday’s adjournment. The notes were found under seat number 222, currently occupied by Singhvi, who represents Telangana. “The matter was brought to my notice, and I have directed a thorough investigation,” Dhankhar said.
The revelation sparked sharp reactions across the political spectrum, with BJP leaders highlighting the seriousness of the incident. BJP National President JP Nadda expressed confidence in the Chairman’s decision to initiate an inquiry, stating that such events “hurt the dignity of the House.” Similarly, BJP MP Manoj Tiwari remarked, “This is a matter of investigation. It is surprising that a bundle of notes is being recovered from Congress leaders. The incident warrants a detailed probe.”
In response, Singhvi denied any connection to the notes and called for a fair investigation. “I carry only one Rs 500 note to Rajya Sabha. I first heard about this when the Vice President raised it. After attending the session from 12:57 PM to 1 PM, I went to the canteen and then left Parliament,” Singhvi clarified.
The Congress leader accused rival parties of politicizing the issue but emphasized the need for a transparent inquiry. “Everyone should cooperate to uncover the truth. If there’s a security lapse, that too must be probed,” he said.
Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge defended Singhvi, urging the House not to name members prematurely. “Without an investigation, how can you blame anyone? The authenticity of the claim must first be established,” Kharge argued.
Union Minister Kiren Rijiju countered, stating there was nothing inappropriate in naming the MP occupying the seat. “The Chairman has merely pointed out the seat and its occupant. The concerns of the members are genuine, and this matter requires a serious investigation,” Rijiju said.
As the controversy deepens, the inquiry’s findings are awaited to shed light on the origins of the mysterious currency bundle and address the concerns raised about security and propriety in the House.
