Vinesh Phogat’s dream that shattered in 12 hours

On Tuesday Vinesh Phogat made history by becoming the first Indian wrestler in women’s category to reach the Olympics final.

She defeated Cuba’s Yusneylis Guzman 5-0. But within 12 hours the entire country’s dream shattered as she was disqualified from the finals and also from the entire competition for being over weight by about 100 grams in her weight category.

Now India has Neeraj Chopra and Mirabai Chanu’s medals to look forward to.

Meanwhile, Israel’s Olympic team has said that some of its athletes have received threats as they compete in Paris amid larger tensions over Palestinian deaths during the war in Gaza and the threat of a wider regional conflict in the Middle East.

Yael Arad, president of the Israeli National Olympic Committee, told The Associated Press on Tuesday that team members had received “centralised” threats meant to generate “psychological terror” in athletes, without giving further details.
