In a historic move, the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) was officially implemented in Uttarakhand on Monday, fulfilling a key poll promise of Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami’s government. CM Dhami became the first person to register his marriage under the newly launched UCC portal, marking the beginning of a transformative legal framework in the state.
The UCC aims to establish a unified legal structure for marriage, divorce, succession, and inheritance, applicable to all residents regardless of religion. It is in line with Article 44 of the Indian Constitution, which advocates for a uniform set of personal laws across the country.
Simple and User-Friendly Portal Launched
The state government has introduced a dedicated UCC portal, ucc.uk.gov.in, to streamline processes related to marriage and live-in relationships. The platform has been designed to be simple and accessible, offering multiple services, including:
Registration of marriages and live-in relationships.
Dissolution of live-in relationships.
Downloading and verification of legal certificates.
The portal is multilingual, supporting 23 languages, and provides UCC-related legal information in both Hindi and English for broader accessibility.
Steps for Online Registration
Residents can register online by following these steps:
Visit ucc.uk.gov.in.
Click on the ‘Apply Now’ button.
Authenticate using an Aadhaar number or virtual ID.
Provide no-objection consent on three mandatory aspects.
Enter the OTP sent to the registered mobile number.
Submit the required details to complete the process.
For those who prefer offline registration, mobile numbers can be used in place of Aadhaar, with OTP-based verification ensuring a secure process.
Broader Implications
The UCC portal provides a robust framework for residents to access legal services with ease, significantly reducing the burden of lengthy offline procedures. This move is expected to enhance inclusivity and efficiency in legal matters related to personal laws.
With this landmark implementation, Uttarakhand has taken a significant step towards modernizing and unifying personal laws, setting an example for other states to follow.
