US Supports UN Reform, Including UNSC Changes, in Response to Elon Musk’s Remarks on India’s Seat

In a recent development, the United States has expressed its backing for reforms within the United Nations, including potential changes to the composition of the United Nations Security Council (UNSC). This affirmation comes in response to comments made by Tesla CEO Elon Musk regarding India’s absence from a permanent seat on the UNSC.

US State Department Principal Deputy Spokesperson Vedant Patel conveyed the nation’s stance, noting that President and Secretary have previously addressed the issue in their remarks to the UN General Assembly. Patel underscored the importance of adapting UN institutions to the contemporary global landscape.

“While specifics on reform steps are not outlined at this time, there is a recognition of the necessity for reform,” Patel stated, emphasizing the need for the UNSC to reflect the realities of the 21st century.

Musk had earlier criticized the current UNSC configuration, labeling India’s exclusion from permanent membership as ‘absurd’. He pointed out the reluctance of powerful nations to relinquish their influence, advocating for a revision of the UN bodies.

India, a populous nation, has long sought a permanent seat on the UNSC to better represent the interests of the developing world. Support for India’s bid has grown within the international community, lending momentum to its campaign.

The UNSC, originally comprising 15 member states, includes five permanent members with veto power and ten non-permanent members elected for two-year terms.

Furthermore, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has pledged to pursue permanent membership for India in the UNSC in its election manifesto titled “Sankalp Patra.” The BJP’s commitment underscores the nation’s ambition to elevate its global influence and decision-making stature.
