A man who ordered food online was left puzzled when the delivery person did not match the assigned rider displayed on the UberEats app. Matt Stevens, the customer, had expected a woman named Sadia to deliver his order, as per the app’s details, but instead, a middle-aged man showed up at his doorstep with the food.
Stevens took to social media platform X (formerly Twitter) to tag Uber and seek an explanation for the change in delivery personnel. He also escalated the matter by sending an email through a Member of Parliament (MP), highlighting that this was the second such occurrence he had experienced in the last six months.
“Hi, Uber. Can you please explain to me why my food, which was supposed to be delivered by a woman, was delivered by a middle-aged man? Thanks, look forward to your reply,” wrote Stevens in his post.
A screenshot from the UberEats app accompanying his post showed that a woman named Sadia was assigned to complete the delivery on a Honda PCX. However, the food was ultimately delivered by an unidentified man, raising concerns about accountability and security in the gig economy.
In his email to the MP, Stevens flagged broader concerns regarding illegal employment in the food delivery sector. “A recent study showed that as many as 4 in 10 UberEats drivers in London are working illegally. Given that food delivery drivers are often in interaction with young women and occasionally children, this uptick is of extreme concern,” he wrote.
Uber responded to the post by requesting further details from Stevens. “We’d like to follow up with you right away. Please send us a DM with the phone number and email address attached to your account along with the order info and any additional details, and a member of our team will get in touch,” stated Uber Support in their response.
