Stand-up comedian Kunal Kamra is facing increased legal trouble as two new FIRs have been registered against him in Maharashtra, bringing the total number of cases to three. The fresh complaints have been filed by a hotelier and a businessman in Nashik, while the first case was lodged based on a complaint by the Mayor of Jalgaon. Authorities are continuing their investigation into the matter.
Kamra, who has been summoned twice by the Khar Police, has yet to appear for questioning. On March 27, Mumbai Police issued a third summons, asking him to present himself on March 31. However, the comedian has refused to apologise for his remarks.
Seeking legal protection, Kamra approached the Madras High Court, citing threats against him. On Friday, the court granted him interim anticipatory bail until April 7, with certain conditions.
Defending his right to free speech, Kamra posted on X, stating, “Our right to freedom of speech and expression is not solely to praise the powerful and rich, even though today’s media may suggest otherwise. Your inability to take a joke at the expense of a public figure does not change the nature of my right. As far as I know, making fun of leaders and the political system is not against the law.”
Reacting to Kamra’s remarks, Maharashtra Deputy CM Eknath Shinde commented, “Freedom of speech exists, and we understand satire, but there should be a limit.”
