Trump Warns Putin of Sanctions, Then Calls Russia Easier to Negotiate With Than Ukraine

U.S. President Donald Trump on Friday issued a strong warning to Russian President Vladimir Putin, threatening large-scale banking sanctions, tariffs, and other penalties unless Russia agrees to a peace settlement with Ukraine.

Calling for urgent negotiations between the two warring nations, Trump urged both sides to come to the table “before it is too late.” However, shortly after his warning to Putin, Trump expressed trust in the Russian leader and stated that negotiating with Moscow was “easier” than dealing with Kyiv.

Trump’s remarks come just days after a tense exchange with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy at the White House. His warning also coincided with a wave of overnight strikes in Ukraine.

“Given that Russia is currently ‘pounding’ Ukraine on the battlefield, I am seriously considering imposing large-scale banking sanctions, tariffs, and additional penalties on Russia until a ceasefire and final peace settlement are reached. To Russia and Ukraine—get to the table right now, before it is too late. Thank you!!!” Trump posted on Truth Social.

His statement follows reports that the U.S. was considering easing some sanctions on Russia in an attempt to improve diplomatic relations. A Reuters report from March 4 indicated that the White House had instructed the State and Treasury departments to review existing sanctions and determine which could be lifted to facilitate future talks with Russian officials.

Trump’s stance marks a shift from that of his predecessor, Joe Biden, who imposed extensive sanctions on Russia following its invasion of Ukraine in 2022. Critics have warned that easing restrictions could embolden Putin and provide financial support for Russia’s military efforts.

Despite initially threatening new sanctions, Trump later justified Russia’s overnight attacks on Ukraine, stating that he understood why Moscow had launched the strikes.

“I actually think he’s doing what anyone in his position would do right now,” Trump said, referring to Putin. “I’ve always had a good relationship with him. And you know, he wants to end the war.”

Trump suggested that Putin may be “more generous than he has to be” in a potential peace deal, calling it a positive sign. He also warned that Zelenskyy’s insistence on security guarantees before agreeing to a settlement could lead to the U.S. withdrawing its support.

“If they don’t want to settle, we’re out of there because we want them to settle. I’m doing this to stop the deaths,” Trump stated.
