Trinamool Congress (TMC) leader Mahua Moitra, who was expelled from the Lok Sabha last month amid cash-for-query allegations, has reportedly vacated her government bungalow in Delhi on Friday after receiving an eviction notice from the Directorate of Estate.
The eviction notice, issued on Tuesday, directed Moitra to “immediately” vacate the premises. The Directorate of Estates warned that if she failed to comply, she and any other occupants “are liable to be evicted from the said premises, if need be, by the use of such force as may be necessary.”
Moitra’s expulsion from the Lok Sabha on December 8, 2023, stemmed from her alleged acceptance of gifts from businessman Darshan Hiranandani in the cash-for-query case.
Despite Moitra challenging the eviction order and seeking a stay, the Delhi High Court, in a ruling on Thursday, refused to grant relief. Justice Girish Kathpaliya dismissed the interim application for a stay on the operation of the eviction order, stating that Moitra, having lost her status as a Member of Parliament due to expulsion, had no right to continue residing in the government accommodation.
“The petitioner having been allotted the government accommodation incidental to her status as a Member of Parliament and that status having ceased upon her expulsion, which expulsion has not been stayed by the Supreme Court despite hearing afforded to her, presently she has no right to continue in the said government accommodation and accordingly, under Article 226 of the Constitution of India, she cannot be granted protection as sought,” said Justice Kathpaliya in the order.
