A 26-year-old man, Luigi Mangione, has been arrested in connection with the killing of UnitedHealthcare executive Brian Thompson, who was shot in a targeted attack last week in Midtown Manhattan.
Mangione was apprehended on Monday in Altoona, Pennsylvania, after a McDonald’s employee recognized him and alerted local authorities, said NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch. Police recovered a weapon, clothing matching the description of the suspect’s outfit, and writings potentially linking him to the crime.
Brian Thompson, 50, CEO of UnitedHealthcare, was killed on Wednesday while walking alone near the Hilton Midtown, where UnitedHealth Group was hosting its annual investor conference. CCTV footage showed the gunman, wearing a hood and mask, following Thompson before shooting him multiple times from behind.
Police reported that Mangione had been staying at a youth hostel in New York City using a fraudulent New Jersey ID prior to the incident. After the shooting, the suspect fled on foot, later switching to a bicycle and eventually boarding a bus out of the city.
Mangione, originally from Maryland with ties to San Francisco, had been residing in Hawaii before the incident. He is an Ivy League graduate of the University of Pennsylvania.
Upon his arrest, Mangione was wearing a blue medical mask and using a laptop at the McDonald’s outlet. He initially provided officers with a fake ID and reportedly became visibly shaken when asked about recent travels to New York.
At his arraignment Monday night, Mangione was charged with gun possession and forgery. No plea was entered, and authorities continue to interrogate him about the motive and circumstances of the crime.
The killing has shocked the business community and raised questions about security at high-profile corporate events. Thompson, a father of two, was remembered as a visionary leader deeply committed to improving healthcare access.
Investigations are ongoing, and police are working to determine if Mangione acted alone or was part of a larger conspiracy.
