Supreme Court Raps Tamil Nadu Minister Udhayanidhi Stalin for “Eradicate Sanatan Dharma” Remark

The Supreme Court on Monday delivered a rebuke to Tamil Nadu Minister Udhayanidhi Stalin concerning his controversial statement regarding Sanatan Dharma. The Court questioned the minister’s decision to file a plea after making remarks that seemed to undermine the principles of freedom of speech and expression.

A bench comprising justices Sanjiv Khanna and Dipankar Datta directly addressed Stalin, emphasizing his position as a minister and highlighting the potential consequences of his words. The bench expressed concern over Stalin’s alleged abuse of constitutional rights, pointing out that as a public figure, he should be mindful of the impact of his statements.

”You abuse your right under Article 19(1)(a) (of the Constitution). You abuse your right under Article 25. Now you are exercising your right under Article 32 (to file plea in the Supreme Court)? Do you not know the consequences of what you said? You are not a layman. You are a minister. You should know the consequences,” the bench said.

Stalin, who is the son of Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M K Stalin and the ruling DMK chief, made the contentious remarks during a conference held in September 2023. He reportedly stated that Sanatana Dharma opposes social justice and equality and advocated for its eradication.

The Supreme Court’s admonition came as a response to Stalin’s move to approach the highest judicial authority, seeking legal recourse. The bench adjourned the matter to March 15, signaling its intent to further address the issue.
