Supreme Court Grants Bail To AAP MP Sanjay Singh

Following a concession from the Directorate of Enforcement (ED), the Supreme Court on Tuesday, April 2, granted bail to Rajya Sabha MP and leader of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), Sanjay Singh, in the money laundering case pertaining to the Delhi liquor policy case.

The Court ordered Sanjay Singh’s release, making it clear that nothing was being said about the merits of the case, after the ED stated that it had no objection to the grant of bail to him given the unique circumstances of the case.

The order was passed by the bench made up of Justices Sanjiv Khanna, Dipankar Datta, and PB Varale. During the bail period, Singh was allowed to engage in political activities, the bench stated orally.

The Court further stated that Singh is not allowed to comment publicly on the case, dismissing Singh’s second petition that contested his arrest and remand as unfounded.

Sr. Adv Dr. Abhishek Manu Singhvi, speaking on behalf of Singh, opened today’s forenoon session by highlighting the fact that the entire ED case against Singh was predicated on the testimony of Dinesh Arora, the former approver who ultimately named Singh after making nine exonerating statements. The fact that Arora was given bail despite ED’s “no-objection” was emphasized, and the court in question observed that ED was “playing smart.”

After searches at his Delhi home, the ED detained Sanjay Singh on October 4, 2023; he is presently in judicial custody. The central agency claims that businessman Dinesh Arora’s employee twice brought Rs. 2 crores to Singh’s residence. However, no money trailing has been established.
