Out of six names presented to the PM-led panel, two have been named Election Commissioners, one is Sukhbir Sandhu of Punjab and the other is Gyanesh Kumar of Kerala.
Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury, a committee member, reported that six names were presented to the panel. “The government has the majority in this committee,” he declared.
Besides the Prime Minister and Mr Chowdhury, Union Home Minister Amit Shah was on the panel.
Taking a dig at the Centre, Chowdhury claimed that last night, 212 names were sent to him for review. “In order to assess the candidates, I had requested a shortlist. However, I missed that chance. The meeting was scheduled for noon today, and I arrived in Delhi at midnight. How can someone look through so many candidates in a single day? I was given 212 names. I was given a shortlist of six names ten minutes prior to the meeting,” he stated.
