Severe cold to continue for 4-5 days over northern India: IMD

For the next four to five days, north India is likely to see dense to extremely dense fog and cold to extremely cold day conditions, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said on Sunday.
It warned that for the next three to four days, cold wave conditions are likely to prevail over Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, and north Rajasthan.

The area around Delhi-NCR saw a little improvement in the weather on Sunday as the thick fog broke up. A little respite was provided by the longer sunshine hours. However, IMD reported on Sunday that the region’s cold air is still subsiding due to strong jet stream winds at higher altitudes.

It stated that over the plains of North India, jet stream winds of about 250 to 300 kmph at 12.6 km above mean sea level are dominant.

Strong western disturbances (WDs) are predicted to affect the Western Himalayan region on January 26, according to IMD officials, though it is too soon to tell if these will be strong enough to break the severe cold spell and fog over the northern plains.
