Sam Pitroda Steps Down as Chairman of Indian Overseas Congress Amidst Controversy Over Racist Remark

In a move that reflects the intensifying fallout from his recent racist remarks, Sam Pitroda has voluntarily resigned as the Chairman of the Indian Overseas Congress. Pitroda’s decision to step down came amidst escalating criticism over his divisive comments, with the national president of the Congress party, Mallikarjun Kharge, accepting his resignation.

The controversy erupted following Pitroda’s remarks, where he made derogatory comments regarding the physical appearances of individuals from different regions of India. Referring to people from India’s East as resembling Chinese and those from the South as resembling Africans, Pitroda’s comments sparked outrage across the political spectrum.

Union Minister Kiren Rijiju condemned Pitroda’s remarks, expressing personal dismay and emphasizing that such statements cannot be taken lightly. Rijiju further criticized Rahul Gandhi, associating Pitroda’s ideology with the Congress leader.

Leaders from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) strongly denounced Pitroda’s comments, demanding an apology from the Congress party. Prime Minister Narendra Modi condemned the remarks, asserting that insulting Indians based on their appearance is unacceptable.

Echoing similar sentiments, Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman highlighted the diversity and unity of India, dismissing Pitroda’s divisive rhetoric. Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde, representing the Shiv Sena, labeled Pitroda’s statements as shameful and divisive.

Amid mounting pressure, the Congress party sought to distance itself from Pitroda’s remarks. Senior Congress leader Jairam Ramesh disavowed Pitroda’s analogies, describing them as unfortunate and unacceptable. However, the Prime Minister accused the Congress of harboring a divisive agenda aimed at fracturing the nation.
