The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has announced that the monsoon is shifting downward and is expected to affect coastal Kerala, Karnataka, and Konkan Goa this week. Heavy rain and thunderstorms are predicted in these regions. Due to the anticipated heavy rainfall, the Goa education department declared a holiday for schools up to Class 12 on Monday, July 15, following the IMD’s issuance of a red alert for parts of the state.
In Kerala, the IMD has issued a red alert for Malappuram, Kannur, and Kasaragod for Monday, and an orange alert for Ernakulam, Thrissur, Palakkad, Kozhikode, and Wayanad. Consequently, schools and colleges across six districts in Kerala will remain closed on July 15.
The IMD forecasts that parts of Kerala, Karnataka, and Goa will receive over 20 cm of rain in the next few days. Additionally, a red alert has been issued for four Maharashtra districts: Satara, Kolhapur, Sindhudurg, and Ratnagiri. Mumbai and Palghar are under a yellow alert, while Thane, Raigad, and Pune have an orange alert. Suburban areas in Mumbai reported heavy waterlogging due to continuous downpour and thunderstorms.
In Delhi NCR, the IMD predicts light rain and moderate-speed winds in the coming days, but no color-coded alert has been issued for the national capital. Rain lashed parts of Delhi on Saturday morning, causing waterlogging and traffic snarls, although it provided relief from the July heat. Noida also experienced rain, leading to slow-moving traffic due to waterlogged roads.
“The monsoon is shifting downward from today. We are issuing a red alert for coastal Karnataka, Kerala, and Konkan Goa for the coming days. There may be more than 20 cm of rain there. Delhi-NCR will receive light rain in the coming days. There is no alert for Delhi,” IMD scientist Dr. Naresh Kumar said.
In Maharashtra, the Kamwari River in the Bhiwandi area of Thane overflowed on Sunday, causing water to enter the homes of people living near the riverbanks.
